Clandestino 016 – Black Merlin

Black Merlin, or George Thompson to his Mum, first came to our attention with his outstanding Brunswick Drive 12″ on Commander Weatherall’s Bird Scarer label last year. Since then, we’ve kept a keen eye on his movements and his unique form of 80’s inspired, cinematic and analogue heavy aesthetic has earned him further releases on the excellent World Unknown imprint and Mike Simonetti’s New Jersey. Look out for an as yet untitled release on London’s LN-CC. We are pleased to welcome him into the Clandestino fold.

Clandestino 015 – Fabrizio Mammarella

We continue to shine a light on quality underground music in all four corners of the world and this week we land in Italy, where Fabrizio Mammarella serves up a mysterious, brooding mix of pitched down dance floor sounds. With a unique sound spanning disco, house & techno, Fabrizio has released on Steve Kotey’s Hairy Claw and Bear Funk imprints and is part of the Slow Motion collective running parties since 2004 in his native Pescara. He also records as Clap Rules, responsible for quirky remixes on DFA, In Flagranti & Tiny Sticks. Turn down the lights…

Clandestino 014 – Above Machine

OK hands up, we have a bone fide cracker of a mix here. We first met Steve Lee on a raucous trip to Croatia a few year’s back and we have been avid followers of his work as Project Club for some time. A stupidly talented producer, his output on labels such as Is It Balearic?, Need Want and Tusk Wax are nothing but essential. His Balearica night in London reads like a who’s who from the underground left field disco scene attracting regular visits from Idjut Boys, Phil Mison, Johnny Nash, Coyote, Paul “Mudd” Murphy, Soft Rocks and more. He recently launched his new vinyl only label Above Machine, under which guise he presents this mix, now on it’s fourth release with a corking EP from Almunia which is topping the more discerning charts everywhere you turn. Quite simply, another must check project from Mr Steve Lee.

Clandestino 013 – Tooli

We take our first visit to Scandinavia for this weeks episode as Tobias Lidström steps forward to produce a blend of some of the more interesting records in his bag. Tobias aka DJ Tooli is a stalwart of the Stockholm nightlife scene and plays regularly across Europe. He’s co-owner of Local Talk Records, one of Sweden’s most respected house music imprints and he is also part of the 24 Hours crew, once responsible for the sadly now defunct but excellent blog. Tobias’ mix steps away from the dance floor and takes us on a trip, taking in dowtempo, cosmic oddities, oddball pop and balearica. A hazy late summer mix indeed

Clandestino 012 – Fernando ‘Live In Buenos Aires’

This month’s podcast comes from Fernando Pulichino who kindly sent us a live mix from a recent set in his native Buenos Aires. We’ve been big fans of Fernando since he appeared in the early noughties as Silver City with long time collaborator Julian Sanza. The pair also formed the backbone of the seminal, now sadly defunct 2020 Soundsystem. But more recently, Fernando has been turning out some sublime disco drenched house cuts featuring his loose, super funky live bass for labels Bear Funk, Redux and Under the Shade. Earlier this year he dropped an LP on Bear Funk which is one of the albums of the year for us.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it… You can still get tickets for the festival if you fancy a few days of sublime music on the Adriatic coast. And why wouldn’t you? Clandestino 010 – Kalidasa

We head into double figures this month as our tenth podcast sees a delightful mix from Brighton’s Kalidasa. Perfectly timed for the arrival of summer, this psychedelia inspired set of sun-kissed dubby disco and shimmering balearica is ideal for tuning in and dropping out by the beach, pool or indeed your back garden. In short, right up our strasse. Kalidasa have forthcoming releases on Tusk Wax, Craig Bratley’s Magic Feet imprint and Solt Rock’s Kinfolk label, we’d urge you to check them out. Sublime sounds from the South Coast

Clandestino 009 – Balearic Social

A mix from one of the Clandestino collective this week as Andy Pye takes a break from his acclaimed Balearic Social radio show to lay down some lights down low music for us. We’re big fans of Andy’s music here at Clandestino HQ. A proper vinyl enthusiast, you can always rely on him to pull out the right music at the right time. His weekly show on Purple Radio is essential listening, pulling in eclectic guest mixes from the likes of Seahawks, Hardway Bros & many others.

Clandestino 008 – Timothy J. Fairplay

Delighted to have our next podcast put together by a producer who’s music we’ve quickly become major fans of over the last couple of years. Timothy Fairplay makes up the Scrutton St studio axis with Scott Fraser and a certain Andrew Weatherall, forming The Asphodells with the latter who have just released their debut album to critical acclaim on Weatherall’s Rotters Golf Club label. Tim’s mix contains lots of exclusive tracks you wont hear elsewhere for a while, including upcoming new productions from Tim himself and his alter-ego Antoine Rouge. Strap in, we are going for a ride…

Track ID’s on request :)

Clandestino 007 – Flash Atkins

Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound. Unfortunately he’s fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire often stoned or drunk on borrowed money and time. To make ends meet he uses his special powers to remix and make deep disco music for Paper Recordings.

Clandestino 006 – Ruf Dug

Ruf Dug in the house. Episode no.6 is hot shit, from somewhere in darkest Mancunia comes 60 minutes of vinyl only dance floor dynamite, with an extra special sprinkling of Ruf’s own FX units, tape delays and dub sirens. Vinyl heads need to check his essential Ruf Kutz label and his rufkutz.net blog is worth a look for edit giveaways and banter, if nothing else…

Clandestino 005 – Tusk Wax

It’s Friday so that means we have a new podcast to take you into the weekend. Something a bit different for our next episode as we ask Tusk Wax to take a break from running his three labels to delve deep into his record crates and put us a bit of a party mix together. It’s a louche selection of disco, boogie, Afro and funk; perfect to get your weekend started. Tusk will be playing at our next party which takes place on Bank Holiday Saturday 4th May. Full details coming soon…

Clandestino 004 – Causa

Episode number 4 in the Clandestino podcast series comes to you from deepest West Yorkshire. Hebden Bridge to be exact; an unlikely hot bed of deep electronic music we’ll have you know.

Causa is the latest alter-ego of Joe Lucas. We’ve been fans of Joe’s work since his outings in the early 2000’s as 61 Players on classic labels like DiY and Fat City, but it’s his latest output on Paperecordings and the excellent Tusk Wax as Causa with his sublime productions packed full of lush synth soundscapes and analogue textures that meant we had to ask him to compile a rare and exclusive mix for us.

Enjoy an hour and a half of leftfield, synth heavy deep house music as we hand the reigns over to Causa…

Clandestino 003 – Scott Fraser

Exclusive alert. We are delighted to have secured a rare mix from one of our favourite producers of last year. Scott Fraser makes up the revered group of producers that is Andrew Weatherall, Sean Johnston, Timothy Fairplay and Daniel Avery that share the same underground bunker studio in East London, affectionately calling themselves ‘The Axis’. Scott’s ‘Life Of Silence’ 12″ on Weatherall’s Bird Scarer imprint in our opinion was the best thing committed to vinyl in 2012, and his releases on World Unknown and Astro Lab are straight up killer. Here Scott has put together a two hour live mix which he promises contains lots of exclusives from the bunker personnel.
